Salem Massachusetts may have recovered year round from their reputation of murdering innocent people, but when October comes, people constantly think of one thing. The Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch trials were a rough time for men and women. If you didn’t look perfect, thought a different way or even had an opinion that wasn’t popular, you could be dunked under water, burned at the steak and tried as a witch. Many people were murdered as witches during these horrible times, and you can visit Salem and take witch tours to discover how misunderstood people were back then and learn some of the gruesome ways that people would test to see if someone was a witch.
Lady luck and the kitchen witch go to Spain.
If you visit Spain, a typically Catholic country, you’ll discover something very unusual. Witches are considered a symbol of luck, especially if you have one in your kitchen. When I was in college I studied abroad in Madrid and wondered why many of the shops carried witches. My host family explained to me that having a witch in your kitchen was a sign of luck and not something to be feared or hated. After learning more about kitchen witches, I bought one for each person in my family as a gift. When I went back to visit a year later, I made sure to stop at a local shop and pick up a new kitchen witch for my host family as well as a couple of the people I had met during my study abroad.
The religious, history witch heads to the UK.
One of the most famous and historic sites of witches and the supernatural is Stonehedge. No one knows how or why it was built, but everyone has their own superstitions and theories on why it exists. If you are a practicing Wiccan and you are visiting Stonehedge, you are able to go to the historical society ahead of time and get access to the ancient ruins for a religious visit before tourists come. You do have to show up early in the morning, and when Stonehedge opens to the public you have to leave, but during that time you will be able to walk around the stones, place crystals and artifacts or religious items on them and also be able to experience them without tons of people around.
